What is co-dependency?

What is codependency

What is codependency

Yesterday afternoon I was swimming laps in my local swimming pool. Swimming can be such a cleansing and liberating exercise because it forces you to let go and trust. I decided to do the back stroke despite having several people in my lane, the lack of any clear marks on the ceiling guiding me and no indication of when I was going to arrive at the end of the lane.

At first I was cautious and apprehensive, but after the first or second time I started finding my groove, feeling more secure and trusting the process. I share this with you because sometime in life you may feel that way too, unsure of how the process will go, lacking guidance or direction and fearful of running into a wall and getting hurt.

When you really feel like a fish out of water you can be consumed by fear and either desperately latch onto those around you like a safety blanket or try to control the situation with an iron fist to feel a sense of power and security in the sea of unpredictability.

If you enter into a relationship with that energy or state of mind you can fall into the unhealthy trap of co-dependency. This is why in today’s True Potential TV episode I will be covering what is co-dependency, what is a codependent and how to recognize the negative patterns of codependent relationships.

You will definitely not want to MISS this great episode.

With love,
Andrea

what causes anxiety 8 signs of anxiety

what causes anxiety 8 signs of anxiety

This past weekend my fiancée and I moved our things from Milan, Italy to a small town outside of Bergamo, Italy where my fiancée’s parents live. Mauro and I will be staying with his parents for the next two weeks until we make our big move to California.

When you have lived the past 17 years on your own, like Mauro and I have, and then go back to living under your parents (or your future in-laws) roof, it can be quite an adjustment. Not only because of the change of routine and environment, but also losing your sense of privacy, independence and personal space.

Often times when your life feels out of control or you feel powerless, it can kick up some very unpleasant anxiety and stress. Your body gets activated, your mind starts spinning and your emotions run wild.

This is why in today’s True Potential TV episode I am covering the 8 main factor that cause anxiety, top 6 signs of anxiety and how to relieve anxiety by challenging the top 12 distorted thinking patterns and taking action in addressing the problems and challenges that lie ahead.

Find out if you tend to use any of the 12 distorted thinking patterns that automatically stir things up emotionally and mentally and how you can start thinking and behaving differently in order to calm your mind, heart, body and soul.

You will definitely want to WATCH this episode and start thinking in a more flexible, rational and open-minded way.

With peace and love, xxoo

Decision Making Skills: 5 Decision Making Tools

Posted on July 16, 2013. Filed under: Lifestyle | Tags: , , |

Decision Making Skills

Decision Making Skills

A few weeks ago I was in New York City for a conference.  It was amazing!  I met so many interesting people and made so many wonderful contacts.

When I was initially making the decision to go I first balanced out the cost of the trip, the loss of time and income, and the short-term and long-term benefits of attending.

Do you ever find that when you are making a really important decision how overwhelming it can become?  Sometimes you can get lost in a variety of emotions and thoughts being weighed out.

Often times, if it is a really important decision, a highly emotionally charged decision or a decision involving a variety of factors you can get caught up in either paralysis mode, impulsivity mode or avoidance mode.

An important way to get unstuck is by using effective decision making skills or having a useful decision making tool to sort through all of the pieces involved.

This is why in today’s True Potential TV episode we are covering decision making skills and decision making tools.

If you have an important decision coming up or you would like to perfect your decision making skills you will definitely NOT WANT TO MISS today’s episode.

xxoo With love, Andrea

How to be Assertive? 4 Ways to Assert Yourself.

How to Be Assertive

How to Be Assertive

My morning was off to a great start.  The sun was shining, I took a nice stroll through the city and even stopped by to my local coffee shop for breakfast.  As I was waiting patiently in line to pay, a lady quickly made a B-line and cut right in front of me and 8 other people behind me.

Was she blind?  Was she trying to pull a fast one?  Or was it an innocent maneuver?

Being in those awkward situations can be uncomfortable and hard to sort out in an instant.  Part of you wants to tell the person off, while the other part of you wants to not make a big deal and let it role off your back.  But how can you honor both parts of yourself, while also respecting the other person?

If you can relate to this scenario, you are going to LOVE, with a capital L, today’s True Potential TV episode.

How to Be Assertive: Assertive Communication Strategies

I will cover how to be assertive and the 4 ways to assert yourself the next time someone crosses the line…or cuts in front of you in line at the coffee shop.

Enjoy and go out there and assert yourself 🙂

What are Defense Mechanisms? 11 Defense Mechanism Examples

Posted on July 9, 2013. Filed under: Lifestyle, Relationship | Tags: , |

What are defense mechanisms

What are defense mechanisms

I just got back home from a relaxing evening at the Virgin Active Gym and Spa. After a long and productive day at work, it is the greatest way to decompress from the mental, emotional, and physical stress from the day.

Back in the day, I was so focused on being in go, go, go mode it was hard to disengage and shift focus to being in be, be, be mode. Being under a lot of stress can leave you feeling exhausted, burnout and irritable.

It can also affect how you perceive others and the challenging situations you are facing. Some of these skewed perceptions are known as defense mechanisms.

We can use them as a way to cope with life’s ups and downs and protect ourselves from pain and overwhelm, but unfortunately they are short-lived and can end up causing us more problems in our interpersonal relationships in the long-run.

Do you ever fall into the trap of using defense mechanisms?

The first step out of the rabbit hole is to 1) know what are defense mechanisms and 2) become aware of the 11 examples of defense mechanisms you and others around you may use to deal with life’s obstacles.

Which is exactly what we are talking about today on True Potential TV.

6 Tips to Overcoming Procrastination

6 Tips to Overcoming Procrastination

Do you get distracted or putting off important tasks until the last minute?  Do you set such high and unrealistic expectations for yourself that your endless list of tasks leaves you feeling overwhelmed and exhausted?

If so you can relate to today’s episode on True Potential today.  You see I have a confession to make.  Although I have taken some steps to prepare my taxes, I am a bit overwhelmed by the process of preparing my US taxes as a resident in a foreign country.

Geez!  Dealing with the bureaucracy of not just one but 2 government agencies is enough to make your head spin.  Plus having different tax deadlines (US April 15th and Italy June 15th), the uncertainty of knowing if I am paying twice (both into the US system and the Italian system) and coordinating between my Italian accountant and my International accountant makes me feel like I am powerless in this unfamiliar terrain.  Can anyone relate to feeling this way sometimes?

Well guess what, today we will be covering the 6 Steps to Overcoming Procrastination that I have used to help me start taking action and start feeling empowered again.

I wanted to share these secrets with you too, so you are definitely going to want to WATCH today’s episode and start incorporating the basic fundamentals so you can start overcoming procrastination and start managing your time better and making your life more peaceful and carefree.

Thank you for reading and watching!

4 Steps to Boosting Self-Esteem

Boosting Self-esteem

Boosting Self-esteem

Have you ever felt like you had to do everything perfectly to be “good enough?”  Do you set such high expectations for yourself that you are overwhelmed by internal pressure and anxiety?  If so, this episode on boosting self-esteem was made especially for you.

I remember when I was in my first “real” job out of college as the Dean of Activities and Teacher at a High School, I felt an incredible amount of personal responsibility and pride in my work.   Being the new kid on the block, without any mentorship, was not always easy.

Often times the position required quick and wise decision making that was often followed by commentary from the peanut gallery, who were unwilling to be involved in the action planning process, but very willing to critique and observe afterwards.  Woowee was that stressful!

I’ll admit the opinions of others did sway me to second guess myself and my decisions sometimes, but remembering to rely on my personal resources and inner strength got me through those tough times.  Although I pushed myself to be super human in that role, the support and love from friends and family kept me grounded and focused on simply doing my best.

In this brand new episode of True Potential TV, you will learn 4 simple steps to boosting self-esteem and self-confidence, so you can authentically and genuinely face uncertainty and challenges with a sense of power and wisdom.

Thank you so much for reading and watching.

Andrea
